I am becoming more and more convinced that anyone who says, “You should seek God’s face and not his hand” has no idea who they are or who God is. Jesus used familiar language to describe the Father and children just like Paul used familiar language to describe Jesus as a brother. A Father is as close as human language can get to describing God’s relationship to us humans.
Why is this important when it comes to seeking God’s face instead of his hand? It is this: anyone who is a loving parent, LOVES it when their little baby toddles over and grabs them by the finger and tries to get them to do something for the toddler. No loving parent wants their toddler to come over and gaze adoringly at them all afternoon. We, as loving parents, delight in watching our children play and be little humans and we love interacting with them.
Take this analogy a bit further: you are a little toddler or an 8 year old or a teenager in God’s eyes and He is you, a loving and fully-devoted parent who Jesus calls good and not angry. Take a good look at yourself, child-you. You are running around, making messes, slobbering on bits of good food and throwing it to the floor, pulling on the dog’s tail and then you get tired and cranky. As the definition of a good, patient and loving parent, Papa God just loves you, bathes you, feeds you, tells you a story and then puts you in bed to rest in your Superman PJs.
In all that time, He didn’t chastise you for being a child. He didn’t make you call out to Him in a foreign language and beg for His hand to help. He didn’t say, “No, child. You must look at my face and hope I will help you or play with you” Etc…
No, as an amazing parent, He does everything He can to make sure you are safe, able to learn safely, well fed, clothed, and as happy as possible all the while playing with you, gladly being pulled along to the kitchen as you point at your bottle, gladly letting you make His hands clap just because you want to, and so on. He delights in this interaction with you, knowing you don’t understand much of anything at all.
He even understands this so much that instead of destroying you for learning about things that cause you nothing but grief, pain, sickness, disease and death; instead of wiping you out, He sends your big brother, Jesus to take the fall for you. And Jesus, being the very definition of love, knowing what He was to endure becomes the very gate by which you get to skip punishment and death just so He could have you back in the family.
Because He delights in you.
Because when you seek His face, you get his hands. When you seek His hands, you get His face. He can’t deny you because He can’t deny Himself.
